Paola Pivi That’s a good question, Don’t try at home
LOWER LEVEL
"That's a Good Question" and "Don’t Try at Home" are boldly scaled sculptures of playful polar bears by renowned Italian multimedia artist Paola Pivi, whose work has been showcased in prominent exhibitions worldwide, including in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, and London. Her art is part of permanent collections at institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum, and the MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome.
Hanging from the ceiling at Aventura Mall, the two bears — each adorned in vibrant feathers — display an audacious sense of freedom and individuality. The smaller piece, "That's a Good Question", features a neon blue bear, curiously looking down from its suspended position. Meanwhile, the larger piece — a hot pink bear on a trapeze — dangles from one leg, arms wide open in an expression of unfettered joy, seemingly defying gravity.
Retaining the natural features of polar bears, the two figures are transformed by their bold colors, feathered coats, and wild poses. While effervescently whimsical, their unrestrained form of self-expression upends stereotypes and expectations. Paola Pivi says that her work’s purpose is “to make human beings better beings.” This installation invites us all to reflect on that purpose — challenging us to embrace our own authenticity as boldly as these lovable bears.
